Every product stands out for its particular features. Sangiovese, piadina and olive oil are the sovereigns of this land of Romagna, the ideal companions for a journey that takes us back in time to discover a historical heritage of colours and aromas that change with the seasons. Savouring the peace of the open air and listening to the people of Romagna talking, we are permeated by their history, the deeds of their heroes, and the music of their poetry. The Etruscans ruled Romagna up to the 4th century BC, and it was later occupied by Hannibal and the Romans. The Emperor Augustus made it his eighth region, building the Via Aemilia. In the Renaissance it was the home of powerful dynasties like the Estensi of Ferrara and the Malatesta of Rimini, where the tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca is still celebrated. In ancient times Romagna was covered almost entirely by marshes, and its entire history is dominated by the hard work of its inhabitants to reclaim the land for better conditions of life. Today Romagna is an industrious region, with many small and medium enterprises of a high standard, and excellent traditions of hospitality that unite the sunny character and joy for life of its people, in Europe's largest and most organized holiday area. Romagna's craft workshops provide one of the clearest signs of local culture. An indelible imprint is left in the memory by the rust-based dyes used for splendid printed fabrics, the cobalt blue of Faenza pottery and wickerwork baskets that still bear the aroma of the land, just a few of the craftwork products that Romagna offers. |
